My Role Visual Design and Research

Objective  To compile and present Design research interviews, design, illustration and publishing. All the copies of the magazine were printed and produced manually on a Riso Printer.

The publication includes interviews from celebrated designers from around the world, including Ken Garland, Paul Elliman, Fraser Muggeridge, Buro Destruct and Nadine Kessler.  A digital transcript of the articles can be found here https://medium.com/poetic-tactics.

Process

A Riso is an old Japanese colour photocopier that was designed mainly for high-volume photocopying and printing in the 1980s. In recent years the Riso has resurfaced due to its potential for printing vibrant colours. There is also an abundance of second hand machines in circulation, as these much loved tools were put aside in the digital era.

Printing each double-sided sheet by hand meant hand folding and self-pagination of the magazine. Breaking down an automated process and doing it by hand allowed a more intrinsic understanding of the production process. Paying critical attention to the practical values and historical processes that informed everyday printing practice demonstrates not only how, but also why things are done the way they are today.
